The Maldives Police Service traces its origins to 29 March 1933 and was formed as a separate civilian service on 1 September 2004, when policing was separated from the defence force. Its headquarters is the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building in Male', and it runs stations across all atolls. Units include SWAT, the Marine Police Wing, a Canine Department and a Cyber Crime Centre.
