The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission was set up on 18 September 2025 under the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act (Act 16/2025). It replaced the Maldives Broadcasting Commission and the Maldives Media Council as a single media regulator. The law has been challenged by journalists' groups, including a constitutional case filed at the High Court in 2026.
